CUCULAND

A bohemian place where furniture, lamps and decorative elements identify the person who conceived it and which have accompanied her for much of her life—this is CuCuLand.

The cave paintings on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and in famous European caves show man’s need to personalize their habitat and tell their story. Now, in the 21st century, when inhabited sites are no longer natural spaces and a number of objects accompany our lives, we still want our personal haven to express who and what we are.
And CuCu Diamantes1 apartment, CuCuLand (as we have called it recalling her solo debut album) is a perfect example of this. CuCu, whose knowledge of aesthetics and decorative arts comes from her art and restoration studies, began renovating her home four years ago. The concept, in her words, is “creating a space where everyone can have fun, but most importantly, creating a space which I can draw creative inspiration from—it’s like my own personal bubble.

“creating a space where everyone can have fun, but most importantly, creating a space which I can draw creative inspiration from—it’s like my own personal bubble.”

The apartment has an open-plan layout with the living room, study, kitchen and dining room on one shared space. The floor covering made of locally manufactured tiles outlines the kitchen/dining room area. Here, a solid wood, Shaker dining table features chairs of different designs, styles and finishes that go from contemporary Cuban to rustic. The emphasis on the floor offsets one other element that gives character to the apartment: the ceiling, which was rid of the plaster seeking to highlight the texture and natural color of concrete. A wise decision that gives this area a very loft-like feel—a “tropicalized” loft we might add thanks to the presence of flowers, plants, fruits and textiles.

The bedroom is also open-plan. There are no dividing walls, thus creating an ensuite that is an extension of the bedroom. Like in the living room/study/kitchen/dining room area, a different flooring delimits this space from the rest of the house. The old bathtub, which came from a friend’s house, was restored and brought up-to-date with a Philippe Starck faucet.

Such a mixture of styles and cultures defines an artist who likes to break boundaries in search of creation. A bohemian place where furniture, lamps and decorative elements identify the person who conceived it and which have accompanied her for much of her life—this is CuCuLand.
