This year, two buildings in the city of Cienfuegos were presented with important awards in recognition of the exquisite care of the city’s heritage assets: the National Conservation Award to the house located at 3902, 16th Avenue between 39 and 41 streets, Punta Gorda, and the National Restoration Prize to the headquarters of the Cienfuegos Drama Center, located at 3306-3308, San Carlos Street, in the historic portion of the provincial capital.
In the restoration of the headquarters of the Drama Center, acknowledgement was made to the rigor and quality in recovering the values of the building, which is one of the most representative of 19th-century domestic architecture in the region. Today, the building is given a social use of great significance for the performing arts in Cienfuegos.
The house at Punta Gorda, owned by Rosa María Tejeda Hernández, granddaughter of the first owner of the property, was built in 1940 and has conserved, exceptionally well, not only its original soberly eclectic architectural features, but also its furniture, decorations, pieces of tableware and lamps. ▪
